He studied composition under esteemed mentors and is a professor at the Thornton School of Music. He directs the Thornton Edge New Music Ensemble, premiering over one hundred student works. Crockett has conducted various ensembles, and his compositions have been commissioned by notable musicians. He has received prestigious awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2006 and the Arts and Letters Award for Music in 2013.
