He gained recognition for his work at the Cleveland Plain Dealer, where he became the chief editorial cartoonist after Hal Donahey's passing. Kuekes won the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for his Korean War cartoon 'Aftermath' and received multiple awards including Freedoms Foundation medals. Besides editorial cartoons, he created comics like 'Alice in Wonderland' and 'Funny Fables'. He passed away on January 13, 1987.
