João Arménio Correia Martins was a Portuguese civil engineer and academic born on November 11, 1951, in Olhão, Portugal. He studied Civil Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico and later obtained a MSc and PhD from The University of Texas at Austin. He worked as an assistant professor, associate professor, and became a full professor at IST. His research focused on solid mechanics, nonlinear dynamics, and computational methods. He passed away on August 5, 2008, in Lisbon. To honor his legacy, several awards were established in his name for outstanding students and researchers.
