José María Aguirre Salaberría was a Spanish man born in Markina-Xemein in 1919. During the Spanish Civil War, he and his family fled to Hendaia, and later he was captured during the German invasion of France. He was deported to Mauthausen concentration camp, where he endured harsh conditions and medical experiments before being liberated. After returning to Spain in the 1950s, he settled in Mallorca, worked in hospitality, and became an advocate for sharing his experiences as a survivor, talking at schools and with the media. He passed away in Palma in 2009.
