Mikel Garmendia Olaziregi, also known as Belarra, was a Basque soldier born on April 23, 1915, in Donostia, Gipuzkoa. He served in the Itxarkundia Battalion during the Spanish Civil War. In 1937, he was proposed to take on the role of political commissar but did not assume the position due to being captured by Franco's forces. He was sentenced to death but later received a pardon. After spending many years abroad, he returned to his hometown and shared rich accounts of his experiences. He proudly identified as Basque throughout his life.
