Mohammed Barkindo was a Nigerian diplomat and oil executive born on April 20, 1959, and passed away on July 6, 2022. He served as the Secretary General of OPEC for three years starting August 1, 2016. Previously, he was the acting Secretary General in 2006 and represented Nigeria on the Economic Committee of OPEC from 1993 to 2008. He led Nigeria's National Petroleum Corporation from 2009 to 2010 and chaired Nigeria's technical delegation for UN climate negotiations since 1991.
