He is the son of Frederick Oliver St John and has a notable academic background, having lectured at University College London before moving to the University of Manitoba, Canada. There, he became a professor of political studies, retiring in 1998. That year marked his succession to the Earldom of Orkney. Additionally, he was appointed a senior scholar at Manitoba post-retirement.
