Sigurður Jónsson was an Icelandic phycologist born on March 25, 1926, in Reykjavik, Iceland, and passed away on June 14, 2007, in Ganges, Hérault, France. In 1959, he demonstrated that the biological cycle of certain Ulvophyceae, such as those in the genus Acrosiphonia, is heteromorphic. The most visible form is the haploid phase, while the diploid phase is a more discreet endophyte form of red algae, which was previously described as belonging to the genus Codiolum.
