S. Sivasankaranarayana Pillai, commonly referred to as S. S. Pillai, was an Indian mathematician renowned for his contributions to number theory. Born in 1901 in Vallam, Tamil Nadu, he gained recognition for his work on Waring's problem, notably determining values of the function g(n). He published significant research on Diophantine approximation and was the first from Annamalai University to earn a D.Sc. in mathematics. Pillai faced financial difficulties but received mentorship and support throughout his education. Tragically, he died in an airplane crash near Cairo in August 1950 while on his way to the USA.
