Sumio Obinata (born December 17, 1950) is a Japanese historian specializing in modern Japanese history, including political history, police history, and social history. He is a professor emeritus at Waseda University. Born in Nagano Prefecture, he served as the Japanese co-editor for a collaborative project titled 'Future Opening History: Modern and Contemporary History of East Asia' involving researchers and educators from Japan, China, and South Korea. His contributions to this work earned him the Japan Journalist Conference Special Award in 2005.
