It was founded in 1732 by German immigrants and was named after Thomas Bryan Martin, a prominent early settler. Martinsburg played a significant role in the American Civil War, serving as a strategic location for both the Union and Confederate armies. The city is home to a number of historical sites, including the Belle Boyd House, the Confederate Cemetery, and the Martinsburg Roundhouse.
