What happened in May 1906

  • May 27, 1906: The first inmates are moved to the Culion leper colony, by the American Insular Government of the Philippine Islands. This marked the beginning of the Philippine government's efforts to isolate and treat people with leprosy, which was considered a highly contagious and incurable disease at the time. The colony was established on the island of Culion, located in the southern Philippines, and remained in operation until 1984.
  • May 29, 1906: Karl Staaff steps down as Prime Minister of Sweden, over the issue of expanded voting rights. He is replaced by right-wing naval officer and public official Arvid Lindman. Staaff's resignation was a result of his failure to secure support for a proposal to extend voting rights to all male citizens over the age of 24, regardless of income or property ownership. This issue had been a major point of contention in Swedish politics for several years, and Staaff's inability to find a compromise led to his downfall. His replacement, Arvid Lindman, was a conservative politician who opposed further democratization.
