What happened in February 1944
- February 8, 1944: On February 8, 1944, during World War II, a tragic maritime disaster occurred when the USS Snook, an American submarine, launched a torpedo attack on the Japanese troop transport ship Lima Maru. This attack resulted in the sinking of Lima Maru, leading to the drowning of 2,765 individuals. The Lima Maru was transporting Japanese military personnel and possibly civilian laborers at the time, making its loss one of the many devastating events highlighting the perilous nature of naval warfare.
- February 24, 1944: During World War II, in a significant and tragic naval engagement, the American submarine USS Rasher engaged in an operation that led to the sinking of two Japanese transport ships, the Ryūsei Maru and the Tango Maru. This event resulted in the drowning of 7,998 individuals, marking it as one of the deadliest submarine attacks in the history of naval warfare. The Ryūsei Maru and Tango Maru were transporting Japanese troops and, notably, the Tango Maru was also carrying Javanese forced laborers (romusha) and Allied prisoners of war, which contributed to the high casualty rate.
- February 26, 1944: In an appalling instance of Nazi propaganda during World War II, Kurt Gerron, a German Jewish actor and director, was coerced into directing a film within the Theresienstadt concentration camp, also known as Terezín, located in what is now the Czech Republic. This film, titled "Theresienstadt," was intended to deceitfully portray the concentration camp as a humane settlement for Jewish detainees, starkly contrasting the grim reality of oppression, suffering, and death that characterized life within the camp. The production, which began under duress, was a cynical attempt by the Nazis to manipulate international perception and obscure the true nature of their genocidal policies against the Jewish people. Upon completing the film, in a tragic culmination of this manipulative endeavor, Kurt Gerron and many of the inmates featured in the film were deported to Auschwitz, the notorious extermination camp in occupied Poland, where they were murdered in the gas chambers. This act of transferring and executing the participants post-production underscores the ruthless exploitation and disposability of human lives by the Nazi regime, using individuals for propaganda purposes only to exterminate them shortly after.
