What happened in January 1954

  • January 10, 1954: On January 10, 1954, BOAC Flight 781, operated by a de Havilland Comet, the world's first commercial jetliner, tragically disintegrated in mid-air and crashed into the Mediterranean Sea near the island of Elba. All 35 passengers and crew aboard were killed. This catastrophic event was caused by metal fatigue in the aircraft's airframe, a problem that was not well understood at the time. The Comet's innovative design included a pressurized cabin to enable high-altitude flight, which subjected the aircraft's structure to repeated cycles of pressurization and depressurization, leading to the development of cracks around the corners of the square windows. The crash of Flight 781 marked a pivotal moment in aviation history, prompting an extensive investigation that led to significant advancements in the understanding of metal fatigue and its impact on aircraft structures. As a direct consequence of the investigation's findings, the design of aircraft windows was re-evaluated, resulting in the adoption of rounded corners to reduce stress concentration points.
  • January 12, 1954: On January 12, 1954, Austria experienced one of its most devastating natural disasters when a series of powerful avalanches occurred across the country, claiming the lives of more than 200 people. These avalanches were triggered by heavy snowfall and unstable snowpack conditions in the Austrian Alps, a region known for its rugged terrain and susceptibility to such natural disasters.
