Gliwice, formerly known as Gleiwitz, is a city in the Silesian Voivodeship of southern Poland. It is situated on the Kłodnica River, a tributary of the Oder River, and has a population of around 180,000. The city has a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Gliwice has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages and was once part of the Kingdom of Poland. It became part of Germany in the 18th century and was known as Gleiwitz. After World War II, the city was returned to Poland and renamed Gliwice. The city is home to several universities and research institutes and is a major industrial center. It is also known for its cultural heritage, including the Gliwice Radio Tower, which is one of the tallest structures in Poland.
