Iwakuni is a city located in the Yamaguchi Prefecture of Japan, on the western coast of Honshu Island. It is known for its iconic Kintai Bridge, a five-arched wooden bridge that spans the Nishiki River and is considered a National Treasure of Japan. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and cool, dry winters. Iwakuni has a rich history, dating back to the Muromachi period (1336-1573), when it was ruled by the Kikkawa clan. The city played a significant role in the Meiji Restoration (1868-1912), and was designated as a special city in 1940.
