The city has a cold and temperate climate, with long, snowy winters and short, warm summers. Kotlas was founded in the 16th century as a trading post and grew rapidly in the 19th century due to the construction of the Northern Dvina Railway. The city is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Kotlas Museum of Local Lore and the Church of the Intercession of the Theotokos.
