Hayti, South Dakota, is a small town located in Hamlin County, approximately 20 miles north of Watertown. The town has a humid continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters. The average annual temperature is 46 degrees Fahrenheit, and the average annual precipitation is 23 inches. Hayti was founded in 1886 by a group of German immigrants, and it was originally named New Hamburg. The town was renamed Hayti in 1890, after the Haitian revolutionary leader Toussaint L'Ouverture.
