Sonora is a city in Sutton County, Texas, United States, situated at the intersection of U.S. Highways 87 and 277, approximately 100 miles (160 km) west of San Angelo. The city has a population of 3,143 as of the 2020 census and is the county seat of Sutton County. Sonora was founded in 1883 by a group of ranchers and farmers. The city is named after the Mexican state of Sonora, from which many of the early settlers came. Sonora has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64.6 °F (18.1 °C), and the average annual rainfall is 23.6 inches (60 cm).
