The town is located at an altitude of 2,250 meters (7,382 feet) above sea level and has a population of approximately 10,000 people. The climate is temperate, with an average temperature of 16 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit). The town has a rich history and heritage, dating back to the pre-Hispanic period. The town was founded by the Otomi people and was later conquered by the Aztecs. After the Spanish conquest of Mexico, the town was given to the encomienda of Hernán Cortés. In the 19th century, the town became a center of the mining industry, and the town's name was changed to San Nicolás Coatepec de las Bateas to reflect the importance of mining to the town's economy.
