Toluca, Mexico, also known as Toluca de Lerdo, is the capital of the State of Mexico, located in the central highlands of Mexico, about 63 km west of Mexico City. It has a humid subtropical climate with an average temperature of 15°C. Toluca has a rich history and heritage, dating back to the pre-Columbian era, when it was a major center for the Matlatzinca people. In the 16th century, the Spanish conquistadors founded the city of Toluca on the site of the Matlatzinca settlement. Toluca played an important role in the Mexican War of Independence and the Mexican Revolution. Today, Toluca is a modern city with a strong economy and a vibrant cultural scene.
