Its average temperature is 16°C, and it has a humid climate with an average annual rainfall of 1,200 mm. The town was founded in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador Sebastián de Belalcázar and is home to a number of historical sites, including the Church of San Miguel Arcángel and the colonial-era bridge over the Guáitara River.
