It is situated in the Tucson metropolitan area, about 8 miles southeast of downtown Tucson. The area experiences a hot desert climate with an average annual temperature of 69.4°F (20.8°C) and an average annual precipitation of 11.55 inches (293 mm). The area has a rich history dating back to the Hohokam people, who inhabited the area from around 300 BC to 1450 AD. The area was later settled by Spanish colonists in the 17th century and became part of the United States in 1853. Drexel Heights is named after Anthony J. Drexel, a financier who helped fund the Southern Pacific Railroad, which passed through the area in the late 19th century.
