The town was first mentioned in 1220, and its name comes from the Germanic personal name Itto and the suffix -heim, meaning "home". Ittenheim has a rich heritage, including the Church of Saint-Martin, which dates back to the 12th century, and the Château d'Ittenheim, which was built in the 16th century.
