Karbalā’ is a city in central Iraq, about 100 kilometers southwest of Baghdad. It is located in the fertile plain of the Euphrates River, and its climate is characterized by hot summers and mild winters. Karbalā’ is a major center of pilgrimage for Shia Muslims, as it is the site of the Battle of Karbalā’, where the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussein, was killed in 680 AD. The city is also home to several important Shia shrines, including the Imam Hussein Shrine and the Abbas Shrine.
