The city has a subtropical highland climate, with warm summers and cool winters. Maseru was founded in 1869 as a mission station and became the capital of Lesotho in 1966. The city is home to a number of historical and cultural landmarks, including the Lesotho National Museum, the Royal Palace, and the Thaba Bosiu National Monument.
