It is located at 38°16′19″N 87°41′16″W (38.2719900, -87.6878000), in the Central Time Zone. The town was founded in 1817 by Abraham Owens and was originally known as Owensburgh. The name was later changed to Owensville. The town is home to the Owensville Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes a number of historic buildings, including the Owensville Courthouse, which was built in 1856. The town is also home to the Owensville Museum, which houses a collection of artifacts and documents related to the town's history.
