Porto Empedocle, also known as Portu Empedocli, is a town in southern Sicily, Italy, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea at the mouth of the Akragas River. The town has a humid subtropical climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Porto Empedocle has a long history dating back to the ancient Greek period, when it was known as Akragas. The town was later conquered by the Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Spanish. It was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy in 1860. Porto Empedocle is known for its fishing industry, its sulfur mines, and its historical landmarks, including the Castello di Chiaramonte and the Chiesa di San Francesco.
