The town is situated in the foothills of the Apennines, on the right bank of the Panaro River. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot, humid summers and cold, foggy winters. Vignola has a rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages. The town was first mentioned in a document from 1046, and it was later ruled by the Este family of Ferrara. In the 16th century, Vignola was fortified by the Duke of Ferrara, Alfonso II d'Este. The town's most famous landmark is the Rocca di Vignola, a 16th-century fortress designed by the architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola.
