A. A. Vaneev was a Russian poet and religious philosopher born on March 7, 1922, in Nizhny Novgorod. After serving in the army, he was imprisoned in 1945 for writing political poetry. He became a disciple of philosopher L. P. Karsavin, preserving his manuscripts. Vaneev returned to Leningrad after rehabilitation, teaching physics and later curating a physics department. In the 1970s, he was prominent in the Leningrad religious intelligentsia and founded a philosophical circle. His memoirs on Karsavin circulated in samizdat and were published abroad in 1988.
