A. James Manchin (April 7, 1927 - November 3, 2003) was a Democratic politician from West Virginia. He served as a member of the House of Delegates (1948–1950; 1998–2003) and as Secretary of State (1977–1985). Manchin was a controversial figure and uncle to current U.S. Senator Joe Manchin. He was married to Stella Matchel Petros and had three children, one of whom, Mark, became the schools superintendent in Harrison County, West Virginia. He was a member of the Catholic Church.
