He has served multiple terms in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and began his political career with the Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), which later split to form a new faction, RSP (Bolshevik). In 2009, this faction merged with the Janathipathiya Samrakshana Samithy (JSS). Thamarakshan has also run as an independent candidate and was elected president of the JSS in September 2021.
