Aare Mäemets, originally named Harry Michelson until 1936, was a prominent Estonian hydrobiologist, zoologist, limnologist, and nature photographer. Born on January 18, 1929, in Tallinn, he graduated from Tartu State University in 1954. His research predominantly focused on the lakes of Estonia, especially their limnological classification and ecological conditions, and he also studied water fleas. He had a significant academic career, working for over four decades at the Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany. He was married to hydrobotanist Aime Mäemets and had a daughter, biologist Helle Mäemets.
