Abassi Madani was an influential Algerian politician and founder of the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS). He participated in the Algerian War of Independence (1954), faced imprisonment by French colonial authorities, and later pursued higher education in philosophy and comparative education. In 1988, he established the FIS, promoting a gradual implementation of Islamic law while advocating for a liberal interpretation. The party gained significant electoral success in the early 1990s but faced banning and violence. Madani died on April 24, 2019, in Doha, Qatar, after a prolonged illness.
