Abdiel J. Adames is a Panamanian academic, biologist, and chemist born on March 18, 1938, in Ciudad de Panamá. He earned his degree in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Panama and a Ph.D. in Zoology from UCLA. He served as an active researcher for 23 years and headed the Ecology Department at the Gorgas Memorial Institute. Adames was a founding member of the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science and the first Director of Research and Graduate Studies and Vice-Rector at the University of Panama, ultimately becoming its Rector from 1986 to 1991.
