Abdoulaye Soumaré was a Malian military leader born on January 12, 1905, in Saint-Louis, Senegal. He joined the French army at 20 and rose to colonel by 1959. Following the establishment of the Malian federation, he was appointed commander of its armed forces. His tenure was short-lived as he was arrested by Senegalese authorities in August 1960 and exiled to France. In December 1960, he became the commander of the Republic of Mali's armed forces, contributing significantly to military organization. A statue honoring him was unveiled in Bamako in 2011.
