Abdul Basit 'Abd us-Samad (1926-1988) was a prominent Egyptian Quran reciter, known as the 'Voice of Mecca'. He memorized the Quran under Sheikh Muhammad Al-Amir and studied recitations with Sheikh Muhammad Selim Hamada. He joined Egyptian Radio in 1951, with his first recitation from Surah Fatir. He became the reader of Al-Imam Al-Shafi'i Mosque in 1952 and Al-Imam Al-Hussein Mosque in 1958, succeeding Sheikh Mahmoud Ali Al-Banna. He left a legacy of recordings and was the first head of the Quran Reciters' Syndicate in Egypt in 1984.
