Abdul Ghani Shahad is a former football player and captain of Al-Najaf FC, having played for the Iraqi national team from 1987 to 1999. He holds an AFC Pro coaching certificate and is currently the coach of the Iraqi Olympic team and Al-Najaf FC. He led the Iraqi U-23 team to a third-place finish in the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship, which qualified them for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. After the resignation of the national team coach in 2018, he was appointed to lead the national team.
