Abete Merang was an I-Kiribati politician and trade unionist, born on February 28, 1926, in Arorae. He served as a member of the House of Assembly from 1974 to 1982, representing Urban Tarawa. In 1974, he was part of the Council of Ministries and was appointed Minister for Health and Community Affairs in Kiribati's first Cabinet in 1979. He passed away on February 22, 1987, in Kuria.
