Abimael Guzmán, born Manuel Rubén Abimael Guzmán Reynoso on December 3, 1934, was a former philosophy professor and a Maoist Marxist theorist who led the Shining Path, a revolutionary organization in Peru. He initiated a people's war at the end of the 1970s through the Peruvian Communist Party, declaring it officially on May 17, 1980. Guzmán was arrested by Peruvian authorities in 1992 and sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism, currently serving his sentence in Lima, under tight military security.
