Able was a female rhesus monkey who, along with Miss Baker, became the first primate to survive a space flight. Born in December 1957 in Independence, Kansas, she flew on May 28, 1959, during the Jupiter AM-18 mission, reaching a peak altitude of 480 km. After the flight, Able died during surgery to remove an implanted electrode. Her stuffed body is on display at the National Air and Space Museum, and her skeleton is housed at the National Museum of Health and Medicine. Able's story has been anthropomorphized, turning her into a symbol of space exploration.
