Mustafa Hamid, also known as Abu Walid al-Masri and Hashim al-Makki, was born in March 1945 in Alexandria, Egypt. He was a jihadist volunteer during the Soviet-Afghan War in the 1980s. Reportedly a consultant for al-Qaeda, he also taught at a training camp in the 1990s. Hamid served as the head of the Al Jazeera bureau in Afghanistan from 1998 to 2001 before relocating to Iran. He was arrested in 2003 and placed under house arrest for eight years, eventually being released in 2011 and returning to Egypt after the revolution.
