Abubakar Shekau is the leader of Boko Haram, who also previously held the position of the Emir of the Islamic State in West Africa. He was born in a farming and pastoral community near the Niger border in Yobe State. Shekau studied Islamic jurisprudence and became involved with Boko Haram after being introduced to its founder, Mohammed Yusuf. He took over the leadership in 2009 following the execution of Yusuf by Nigerian police. Shekau has accused Western values of contributing to Nigeria's issues, including rampant corruption and severe poverty.
