He served as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Aligarh Muslim University and was the editor of Tehzeeb-ul-Akhlaq. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2009 and the Ghalib Award in 2013 for his contributions to Urdu literature. He was a former student of Darul Uloom Deoband, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Aligarh Muslim University. From 1996 to 1999, he was the head professor of the Urdu department at Aligarh Muslim University and was regarded as a major pillar in Urdu literary criticism.
