Abuna Merkorios, born Zey Libanos Fanta in 1938, was an Ethiopian bishop and the fourth patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. He was elected after the death of Abuna Tekle Haymanot in May 1988. Merkorios served as patriarch for three years until 1991 when the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front ousted the Derg military council in Addis Ababa. After nearly three decades in exile, he was allowed to return to Addis Ababa and was recognized as patriarch alongside Abuna Matthias.
