He completed his Abitur in 1956 and studied classical archaeology, Greek, and Latin philology from 1956 to 1963. He earned his doctorate focusing on Campana reliefs and later became a scientific assistant in Marburg. He obtained his habilitation in 1973 and served as a professor at Marburg and then at the Free University of Berlin, where he was emeritated in 2005. Borbein has held various prestigious memberships and editorial positions in archaeology.
