He has a strong political background, having been elected consecutively to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Konni Constituency and held key ministerial portfolios under Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. In 2019, he became the first Congress candidate to win in Attingal since 1989 and was re-elected in 2024, narrowly defeating his opponent by only 684 votes.
