Metropolitan Athanasius (born Anzor Chakhvashvili) was a prominent Georgian Orthodox cleric who served as a bishop in various capacities from 1978 until his retirement in 2009. After completing his education at Sighnaghi and the Tbilisi Spiritual Seminary, he was ordained a deacon and later a priest. He was consecrated bishop in 1978 and became the Metropolitan of Rustavi and Marneuli in 1996. He was known for his influential role within the church and received the title of Skhimetropolitan shortly before his passing in 2012.
