Afonso Maria do Santíssimo Redentor Araújo was a composer from East Timor, best known for creating the national anthem 'Pátria' in 1975. The anthem was officially adopted after East Timor's independence on May 20, 2002. Born on August 2, 1942, in Portuguese Timor, Araújo was captured and killed by Indonesian forces between February and March 1979. He was the sixth of eight siblings, with notable family members involved in Timorese politics. He was honored posthumously for his contributions to the nation in 2006.
