Ahmad al-Tayyeb is an Egyptian Islamic scholar and the 48th Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, appointed on March 19, 2010. He previously served as the president of Al-Azhar University, and was the Mufti of Egypt. Fluent in French and English, he has translated numerous sources from French to Arabic. Al-Tayyeb has written extensively on Islamic jurisprudence and Sufism. He was born on January 6, 1946, in Luxor, Egypt, into a Sufi family, and his brother heads a Sufi order.
